The city of Las Vegas Derfelt Senior Center now offers a Zumba Gold® class for ages 50+ on Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Participants enjoy easy-to-follow moves and exciting Latin rhythms that combine for so much fun they hardly notice they are exercising. It's an energizing workout that burns calories and tones muscles, but is enjoyable, like group dancing. The cost is $3 per class, plus a current Active Adult/Senior Programs membership of $2 per year.
The center offers a host of other classes and activities. Fitness choices include Pilates, yoga, chair fitness, tai chi, chi kung, line dancing, tap for beginners and intermediate, and ballroom dancing. Those looking for a mental challenge may enjoy Texas Hold'em, party bridge, duplicate bridge, Mah Jongg, conversational Spanish or the writing for pleasure class. Residents looking to improve their skills may want to consider the painting, beginning computer, quilting and knit/crochet classes. Those who want to spend time with friends, or make new ones, may enjoy the free movies and popcorn sessions offered on Tuesdays and Fridays, the Good Time Singers group, book club, monthly Bunco & Brunch event, or occasional special event.
Derfelt Senior Center is located at 3343 W. Washington Ave., in Lorenzi Park. The center is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call (702) 229-6601 for more information, or go online for a schedule of programs and activities offered by the center.
