The city of Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department are organizing several "National Night Out" events throughout the community. All events are planned for Tuesday, Aug. 3. Representatives from local law enforcement agencies, including Metro Police and the Las Vegas City Marshals, as well as various departments of the city of Las Vegas, will be on hand to answer questions and provide helpful information. In its 27th year, National Night Out is a nationwide effort to heighten crime prevention awareness, to generate support for local anti-crime programs and to strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. Mayor Pro Tem Gary Reese and Metro Police will be attending three National Night Out events in Ward 3, including at:
• Oasis Ridge Apartments, from 4 to 7 p.m.
3040 E. Charleston Blvd.
• McKnight Senior Apartments, from 5 to 6 p.m.
651 McKnight St.
• Palm Terrace Apartments, from 6 to 7 p.m.
2417 Wengert Ave.
Crime prevention specialists will provide a 20-minute crime presentation at each location as time permits.
Ward 1 Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian will be taking part in the Back-to-School & National Night Out Celebration in the Clark High School cafeteria at 4291 Pennwood Ave. from 6 to 8 p.m. Free school supplies for children ages 5 to 16, Strengthening Families Tool Kits from Sesame Workshop Scholastic Books, and light refreshments will be distributed while supplies last. Community vendors and low-cost children's vaccinations will be available. A child's shot records must be brought to the event in order to take advantage of available vaccinations. This event is sponsored by Councilwoman Tarkanian, K.E.E.N., National PTA Urban Family Engagement Initiative, Target, Terrible Herbst Oil Company and the Metro Police. Join Ward 6 Councilman Steven D. Ross and the Spring Mountain Ranch community from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the community park at 8450 N. Fort Apache Road. Families will enjoy live entertainment and games. Mayor Goodman is scheduled to stop by during the evening. Representatives from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Nevada Highway Patrol, AMR, Las Vegas Fire and Rescue, Detention and Enforcement, Animal Control and Parking Enforcement will be on hand to answer questions and provide helpful information.
Councilman Ross said, "This is an opportunity for citizens to show their support for our local law enforcement and to meet their neighbors."
Ward 4 Councilman Stavros S. Anthony will attend the National Night Out event at Desert Shores Laguna, located at 2500 Regatta Drive. Organized by the homeowners' association, the event is scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. There will be swimming, music, prizes, hot dogs, soft drinks, popcorn and cotton candy, while supplies last. Mayor Goodman plans to attend at 5:30 p.m. Representatives from Metro Police and Las Vegas Fire and Rescue will be on hand to answer questions.
