Due to the increasing number of women in correctional settings, there is a growing recognition of the need for gender-responsive services.  Their pathways into the system (substance abuse, violence, and poverty) provide the framework for developing effective services.  The “Gender Matters- Creating Services for Women in the Criminal Justice System” workshop will feature noted speaker, Stephanie S. Covington, PhD, LCSW who will focus on the specific programming needs of women in correctional settings.

Conference Topics:

Dr. Covington will provide a descriptive profile of women; the differences between male and female offenders; as well as guiding principles and theoretical foundation for developing services.  The emphasis however is on the demonstration and practice of specific interventions drawn from evidence-based manualized program material (including Helping Women Recover and Beyond Trauma).  The NIDA-funded research findings on these gender-responsive and trauma-informed programs are also discussed.

This two-day training course will cover:

  • Differences between male and female offenders
  • NIC guiding principles
  • Research findings on gender-responsive services
  • Trauma and its implications for women’s services
  • Moving research into practice
  • Specific intervention strategies for women

Continuing Education - 12 CEU/CLE
